Courageous Rail Staff Member Receives Critical Wounds During Mass Stabbing Incident on Express Train
A valiant train staff member who stepped in to save travelers during a multiple knife attack on a express train has suffered life-threatening injuries, authorities stated on Sunday.
Particulars of the Frightening Event
CCTV video reportedly shows the employee trying to halt the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders described a frightening 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with injured victims fleeing through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Police declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
The event on the weekend led to 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several people have now been discharged from hospital.
A witness recorded the individual brandishing a big knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted police on the station. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – particularly the brave employee of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by specialist officers,” said a high-ranking police officer.
Labor Reaction and Calls for Measures
Rail associations were quick to commend staff and demand more action. One union leader said he would be “requesting immediate discussions with authorities, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the strongest possible assistance, resources and effective procedures in place”.
Another union representative urged the train operator and government “to act swiftly to review safety, to help the impacted workers, and to ensure that no incident like this happens again”.
Operator Commended for Quick Thinking
The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been praised by union officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He didn’t stop the service in the center of two stops where it’s clearly challenging for the emergency services to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” explained a union official.
Additional Information
Police said they received the first emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An witness described initially wondering if the situation was a Halloween prank, but quickly understood from people's expressions that it was serious.
Authorities have stated there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a terrorist attack and have requested the public to provide with any additional information.
Rail operations on the impacted line are anticipated to experience delays until the following day, with travelers advised to defer their journeys where possible.
