Donald Trump along with Japanese Recently Appointed Premier Share Praise and Commit to Reinforce ‘Extraordinary’ Relationship
In the course of a latest trip to Tokyo, former American leader Donald Trump and Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi exchanged friendly praise and pledged to strengthen the already strong two-way relations.
Highlights from the Meeting
Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ figure and applauded her on becoming Japan's first woman prime minister. During their talks at the capital's official venue, Trump voiced optimism that she would prove to be one of the ‘outstanding leaders’ of Japan.
The prime minister, who is a close associate of former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe, praised his initiatives to resolve global conflicts and according to sources vowed to nominate Trump for the prestigious award.
Trade and Defense Agreements
Both governments revealed a list of collaborative initiatives in areas such as energy, AI, and critical minerals. Japan-based companies are exploring funding of up to $400bn in the US.
Additionally, Tokyo had earlier pledged $550 billion in strategic US investments, loans, and guarantees as part of an agreement to secure relief from Trump's tariffs.
These actions are viewed as potentially reducing any future requests from the US side for Tokyo to increase its military spending. Takaichi responded to this by committing to fast-track proposals to raise military budget to 2% of gross domestic product.
