{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with F1 track officials
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The alarming incident took place on the third rotation when track officials were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his compromised front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two dudes dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a live track track officials can be allowed to just sprint across the track in that manner. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was notified that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the governing body
"In the third rotation, track officials were informed and made ready to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send personnel were canceled and a safety warning flag was raised in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what happened subsequent to that time"
