Jude Bellingham Must Eliminate the Immature behavior to Reclaim a Central Position Under Coach Tuchel.
If Jude Bellingham wants to fight his way back into England’s top team, he would be wise to eliminate the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted when he saw that his number was being shown after an evening of mixed performance in the match against Albania was not good enough.
"I prefer not to overstate it but I stand by my words 'conduct is crucial' and consideration for the players who substitute on," stated Tuchel. "Decisions are made and you have to accept it being a professional."
Bellingham has to learn. It was unnecessary for an outburst. Harry Kane had just put the national team 2-0 up in a meaningless match, with only six minutes remaining and he, who had not played particularly well, received a caution for a foul on the Albanian striker. This was hardly a questionable change. In fact it would have been unwise for Tuchel to leave Bellingham on because there was a risk the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the first match of the World Cup by getting a second yellow card.
Shifting Focus on Himself
But Bellingham made himself the center of attention. There was no disguising the player's annoyance when he clocked that he was going to make way for a teammate. He threw his arms up and even though he shook Tuchel’s hand on his way to the sideline there was no doubt that Tuchel was not impressed.
This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He praised his teammate for providing the assist for Kane to score his second goal, but everything else was harmful to his cause. It is not as if complaining was going to reverse the substitution. Tuchel has talked so much about respecting team hierarchies and the necessity of acting professionally.
In the Spotlight
He, left out of the previous squad, has faced close inspection after returning to the fold this month. In effect he has been on trial and he hasn't helped his case with his response to his substitution as England rounded off a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a feisty challenge from Albania.
Tactics and Formation
This implies opinions are divided on whether the team function at their best when Bellingham plays. What we saw was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested from the manager in the beginning. He has provided the squad organization and direction over the past few matches, using a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, a playmaker and out-and-out wingers, but there was a different feel versus Albania. Jarell Quansah was given his first cap, the midfielder made his first start for England and the role of Stones as a part-time midfielder meant there was faint echo to the Manchester club's 2023 treble winners.
Mixed Performance
Bellingham was a mixed bag. He created an opportunity for his teammate after the break but frequently appeared too desperate to impress. Several poorly executed passes. An unnecessary confrontation with an Albania midfielder early on. The team looked disjointed for much of the second half. One Albania chance followed Bellingham gave the ball away. His booking occurred when he was dispossessed from Broja and fouled the attacker.
Substitutes Decide
In the end the squad's strength was decisive. Tuchel threw on Phil Foden, who seemed better suited to the spot occupied by Bellingham during the first half, and Saka. Later Saka whipped in a set-piece for Kane to break the deadlock. It highlighted that set pieces will be crucial in the upcoming tournament.
Relationship Not Broken
Nevertheless, Bellingham was the story. The quality of Rashford’s assist for Kane's goal was a little lost in the ridiculousness of the substitution incident. At the end, the focus was on Bellingham. Tuchel came over behind him and guided Bellingham towards the English fans. Their connection remains intact. The coach isn't ready to discard the player just yet. Yet whether he is willing to grant him a starring role is not guaranteed.
