Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
