Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to the Game

The seasonal game drop for Minecraft has touched down — and it brings with it the first new weapon introduced into the game since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is finally here and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mayhem Mounts drop also incorporates a host of fresh elements and enhancements centered around riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the creators had already known it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we wanted a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," stated a lead developer. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also was visually fitting for the use case."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can joust against your companions on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is a major functions for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the thrust, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you couch your lance and deal more damage [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The wild enjoyment doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] excellent for equipping the elytra and flying forth and making some real mayhem," she teases.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now real, and it deserves to be an competitive event right away.

Another key feature in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This aquatic being, which is modeled after the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it move you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also conserve your oxygen levels, so there's no need to come up for air for fresh air.

The remaining new features are mostly things that want to kill you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a zombie Nautilus appearing in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you succeed in dispatch the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've pondered this issue on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for sea mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you encounter underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Additional features include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you venture in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse waterways while mounted on a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now available at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it deserves.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

In summary, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear on its own — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and new threats trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for all major editions of Minecraft.
