Premier League News: Hannibal Banned for Misconduct; Guardiola Insists 'Back Line Must Get Better'
From the world of top-flight news, a key player has been handed a substantial suspension, a head coach has singled out a player's mistakes to make an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded defensive improvements following a wild victory.
1. Mejbri Issued Four-Game Ban and Financial Penalty
Burnley's midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-match suspension and a £15,000 penalty following misconduct in October's fixture versus Leeds United. The governing body stated Mejbri faced an independent regulatory commission following allegations where he spat towards visiting supporters around the 67-minute point of a 2-0 victory for Burnley.
A release read: “An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned the Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions in their top-flight match with Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that he acted against the laws of the game or in a poor way and/or using abusive and unacceptable behaviour through spitting towards the direction of Leeds United fans.”
It continued, “Mejbri later admitted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match ban and a fine after a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for the sanction are to be released at a later date.” Burnley, now 19th in the Premier League standings, visit 12th-place Newcastle this Saturday.
Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Errors to Make an Argument
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of seasoned players is not an issue at team, highlighting that defender Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not prevent the 28-year-old from having a bad game during a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.
Maresca, who oversees the most youthful squad in the division, does not feel that inexperience was a factor in the poor result. He presented his case by criticising Tosin, the most experienced player on the pitch, who delivered an error-strewn performance in central defence.
“People always mention a lack of experience after we fail to win,” the coach said. “When we defeated Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced players. I understand that if we don’t win, people are always searching for an explanation, but in my view the reason why we didn’t win to Leeds was not down to the experience, it was because we were not at our best.”
Maresca continued, “Who was the oldest one on our team in the match? Who was? Was he any good? Therefore, it’s not about his age. It’s about those 11 men, they were not up to standard.”
Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Has to Get Better'
Pep Guardiola has insisted the champions have learnt from a recent scare at Fulham and the episode is now in the past. The team held on for a 5-4 win in a remarkable encounter on Tuesday, having led 5-1 with about 60 minutes played.
This followed they resisted a Leeds comeback and won 3-2 in the prior fixture, it raised further doubts about if they possess the defensive steel required to mount a challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is behind us,” Guardiola said. “Good lessons, hopefully. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, you have to take onboard both good and bad in the good things and results and think of what's next.”
“Naturally I am worried,” he admitted. “We are trying to analyse what happened, so as not to allow so many goals. After conceding three scored against Leeds, and five goals against Fulham you can see the two versions, correct? So, always done plenty of good things. Yet how many attempts did Leeds ? Three? They scored two. That ratio is good. How many shots on target for Fulham have? Five, six? So our ratio of shots conceded is too high. We must be better.”
Newcastle Prioritise on Defenders' Contracts
The Magpies' new football chief, Ross Wilson, has made contract discussions with key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his to-do list at St James’ Park. Wilson joined after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and is pleased that midfielder Sandro Tonali has a deal extending to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
That has left Wilson free to prioritise talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement set to expire in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, Newcastle's efforts have assumed a certain urgency.
“The initial few days after starting is when I discovered that Sandro’s deal is significantly better than I was expecting,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that we would want to renew Tino’s deal and also would want to renew Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are underway.”
Manager Eddie Howe will be missing Botman against the match against Burnley on Saturday, with the defender expected to be out for at least another week.
Nuno Says Paquetá Will Start for West Ham
West Ham head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá will return to start when they face Brighton on Sunday, having completed a ban following a sending-off he received Liverpool.
“It is in the past,” Nuno remarked. “I am confident it will not happen again as he personally admitted his mistake. We spoke in the dressing room. I believe it is over and will not be repeated.”
He also understands the intense strain facing his team, currently in the relegation zone before Saturday's fixtures. “We cannot avoid it,” he admitted. “It's a reality. We have to face it. We are fighting for our top-flight status. We can't hide it.”
6. Arteta Pleased with No 9 Stand-in Merino
The Spanish midfielder may keep his place as Arsenal’s centre-forward despite the club's usual frontmen return from injury. The midfielder has been deployed as an emergency number nine due to injuries to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for Arsenal’s first goal against Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second during a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
