Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other marked cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official said the incident made him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
